Making a Difference by Advocating for Change
SRHN develops and supports local, state and national legislation and public policies which provide resources and critical funding for solutions to the nation’s opioid crisis. In addition to legislative advocacy, we also aim to further the public’s understanding of both chronic pain and Substance Use Disorder through public awareness initiatives such as community events, online education, and social media outreach.
Working with local and federal government, we aim to implement legislation combatting the opioid crisis in our home state and across the nation; Steve Rummler HOPE Network was a driving force behind the passage of Steve’s Law in 2014 and the Opioid Epidemic Response Law in 2019.
Steve’s Law
Steve’s Law (Minnesota Good Samaritan/Naloxone legislation) passed unanimously through both houses of the Minnesota state legislature in 2014. Steve’s Law provides limited immunity to those who call 911 in good faith to save a life and allows first responders, law enforcement and trained lay people to administer naloxone, which can counteract the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes.
Opioid Epidemic Response Law
The 2019 Opioid Epidemic Response Law is a sweeping legislative accomplishment that raises funds from prescribers, drug manufacturers and distributors to fight the opioid crisis, and created the Opioid Epidemic Response Advisory Council (OERAC) to oversee the distribution of this funding to organizations across the state of Minnesota.
FED UP!
The Steve Rummler HOPE Network serves as the fiscal sponsor for the FED UP! Coalition, and SRHN founder Judy Rummler served as Chair of the FED UP! Coalition and the FED UP! Rally Steering Committee since its inception up until her retirement in 2018. On a national scale, FED UP! calls for immediate, comprehensive federal action to end the epidemic of addiction and overdose deaths.
